Guidance on Bereavement in the Workplace Issued by Acas

Acas have published guidance for employers for managing bereavement and creating bereavement policies.

Research indicates that one in ten employees are likely to be affected by bereavement at any given time. This means it essential that employers understand how they can manage and assist bereavement in the workplace.

Bereavement can affect employees and business in a variety of ways. Employees may suffer emotional, physical and psychological difficulties that may prove hard to manage in the workplace.

The guidance issued by Acas aims to:

  • Assist employers in managing bereavement in the workplace.
  • Give guidance on how to manage sudden absence, or temporarily replace employees no longer able to carry out their duties.
  • Assist employers in creating policies regarding bereavement
  • How to manage employee performance after bereavement
  • How to train workplace leaders in giving support and showing compassion towards bereaved employees.

The guide places an emphasis on creating an environment that is supportive and compassionate. It also encourages business wellness by highlighting that employers should show that they value their employees in difficult times in order to build loyalty, reduce nascence and foster better retention of employees.
