Reflections of a Trainee Solicitor: My First Three Months at Miller Samuel Hill Brown

We are delighted to announce that Holly Lafferty has joined us as a Trainee Solicitor at Miller Samuel Hill Brown following her successful summer placement. We had the chance to sit down with Holly and gain some valuable insights into her new role amidst her busy schedule.

Could you please share with us what your experience has been like during your first two months at Miller Samuel Hill Brown?

Given that I was acquainted with the firm prior to the commencement of my training contract, having done a summer placement and a work-based learning elective (as part of my DPLP), I didn't really experience the first day nerves my friends spoke of. Much like on the first day of my summer placement, I felt immediately welcomed and supported by the firm. I was given a 3-day induction, which allowed me to become familiar with the workings of the firm, their policies and systems. At the end of my first week, I was even treated to a beautiful welcome lunch at Little Tuscany, Glasgow. Throughout my traineeship so far, I have gained copious amounts of invaluable experience from incredible solicitors, from sitting in on client consultations, to attending court. I have been trusted to draft court documentation, speak with clients and provide advice (under the supervision of my training partner). My first seat is in Civil Litigation. Prior to the commencement of my traineeship, I was invited to a team meeting and lunch. This was extremely useful as it gave me an insight into the type of transactions, disputes and work I would be dealing with on a day-to-day basis.

In terms of experience, what has been the most significant change for you as you transitioned from a summer placement student to a Trainee Solicitor?

I was fortunate enough to have done a one-week summer placement in the firm prior to securing a training contract. This week allowed me to gain invaluable experience by conducting legal research, assisting with administrative tasks and most importantly observing experienced professionals. It also allowed me to assess whether I would be a good accessory to the firm. I learned that you should be pro-active in seeking out new tasks, I now have the confidence as a trainee to volunteer help. As cliché as it sounds, you must be able to prioritise tasks and time manage accordingly. I never quite grasped how important this was in the summer placement, but as a trainee in the litigation department these skills are imperative, with court deadlines always on the horizon.

What has been your highlights and challenges so far?

My biggest highlight so far was when I raised my first ever commercial action. I had been involved in this case since the beginning from reviewing the file, to drafting demand letters, to raising court proceedings. It was a great way for me to practically familiarise myself with the legal procedure. Every day is exciting in Civil Litigation, as the practice area covers a plethora of scenarios, so I am sure I will have a new highlight again next week!

In terms of personal growth and professional development what has this been like?

I have made a conscious effort to pro-actively seek out opportunities which will catalyse my personal growth and professional development. I have joined the firms Social Committee and Charity Committee and have attended various networking events. Most recently, I took part in a boxercise class at Kynock Boxing Gym, hosted by Brewin Dolphin, and enjoyed some drinks at an event hosted by Rathbones at Bar Soba in Merchant Square. Networking with people from wealth management and financial firms has allowed me to enhance my financial and commercial awareness, which will undoubtedly make me a better solicitor.

What are you most looking forward to in your future?

The Diploma at Strathclyde is very interactive, and advocacy focused. I found myself enjoying oral advocacy more than written advocacy. Therefore, I would say that I am most looking forward to appearing in court in the future. I have already begun to accrue the 20 hours required for me to obtain my restricted practicing certificate, so hopefully I will be able to appear soon!

Any tips/recommendations for others who are currently graduating and/or looking to start their traineeship?

Don't just settle! Yes, the legal job market is so competitive but that is no reason to settle for a firm whose values do not align with yours! When researching law firms, try to choose one that fits with your personal interests, personality and career goals. Quite often the right candidate is not chosen based solely on their qualifications but because they are the correct 'fit' for the firm. This is why summer placements are so beneficial, as you get to see whether you are the right fit for the firm but more importantly whether the firm is the right fit for you. So, be pro-active, apply for summer placements, seek out mentors and role models and believe in your ability to choose your correct path to qualification.
