The most common age to get divorced is apparently between 40 and 49, and the most common length of marriage ending in divorce is between 11 and 20 years.
These are some of the findings from the 10th annual matrimonial survey carried out amongst family lawyers by Grant Thornton.
The survey also found that there has been a change in the average value of assets that need to be shared during a divorce. In 2013, no lawyers responding to the survey reported seeing clients with assets valued less that £250,000 on average. The corresponding figure for 2012’s survey was 14%. Around 15% of couples had assets worth over £4 million (6% in 2012) and 4% had assets over £10 million (2% in 2012).
The survey suggests that this apparent increase in the value of assets to be divided may be partly due to the recovering economy or to a rise in the number of people settling lower-value divorces as litigants in person.
The state of the economy is also thought to have influenced the number of divorces taking place. Around 49% of lawyers reported a fall in the number of divorces taking place during the recession, and 79% thought that the economic downturn had caused people to put off getting divorced.
“In tough economic times, when people’s budgets are tight, it is perhaps not surprising to see a fall in the divorce rate,” says Nick Andrews, Partner, Forensic and Investigation Services. “Now that there is continuing positive economic news, it will be interesting to see if the divorce rate starts to edge up again.”
