A property dispute has developed in a remote Scottish village over ownership of the local bowling green and clubhouse, reports the BBC.
The land and property in question are located in the village of Wanlockhead in Dumfries and Galloway. The dispute is between Buccleuch Estates, which is a major landowner in the area, and the local village council, and arose after Buccleuch Estates sold the bowling green and clubhouse to a local museum trust. Wanlockhead’s village council has objected to this sale and called into question the Estate’s ownership of the property and therefore its right to sell it.
According to a spokesperson for the village council, although Buccleuch Estates may own the land, the clubhouse itself was originally funded and built by the village community, with no contribution from the Estate, and therefore is the property of the village.
However, Buccleuch Estates maintains that its ownership of the land and clubhouse is not in doubt. The local bowling club had previously held a lease on the property, but this apparently lapsed in 2011. After this, the clubhouse had sat empty and its condition had deteriorated considerably. Under the terms of the sale to Wanlockhead Museum Trust, the building is to be restored and used once again for the community’s benefit.
