The Costs of Work-Related Accidents

A new report from the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) has provided an analysis of a number of studies into the costs associated with inadequate health and safety provisions in the workplace.

According to EU-OSHA, the costs of injuries and illness at work can be significant. There were apparently 5,580 work-related fatalities across the EU-27 in 2007, and 2.9% of the workforce were involved in an accident at work that led to them being off work for more than three days.

In addition, in one year around 23 million employees suffered an illness that was either caused or made worse by their work environment.

The report acknowledges that placing an accurate cost, including costs relating to productivity, healthcare, quality of life, administration and insurance, on this level of injury and ill health is complex. However, EU-OSHA argues that it is important to do so in order that effective measures can be implemented to improve occupational health and safety.
